Greetings! My name is Steve Cook and I've been a licensed Texas driver since I was 16 years old.
Several years ago I tried to lookup and search for a Texas license plate number in order to find the owner of a car that was parked in my neighborhood.
The Runaround
Unless there is some compelling reason, like a criminal act, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will deny your request. After a lot of Internet research, and mind-numbing hold times, I decided to explore other methods.
The Texas Open Records Act
In the state of Texas there is a law called the Open Records Act. By invoking the Open Records Act and paying a fee, you can gain access to all types of publicy recorded information. After months of trial and error, I located and filled out the proper paperwork, paid a fee, and was able to get the Texas license plate information I was looking for.
Why this Website Exists
It was a real pain to find the necessary paperwork, fill out all the forms, pay the fee, and then submit everything to the State of Texas ... but in the end I got my report! I'm a website designer and database developer so I decided to come up with a way to offer this service to anyone who needs it.
